ME AND I
This work explores the internal conflict between "me" and "I", a tug between self-acceptance, self-image, and authenticity. How can we balance the part of ourselves that craves independence and true expression with the part that clings to the opinions, judgements and expectations of others about us?
NIX THE NO
The ‘No’ vote in Australia and the recent setbacks in New Zealand due to the change
of government, weigh heavily on my heart.
The work honours indigenous perspectives and envisions a more inclusive,
equitable, and sustainable future where the wisdom of indigenous communities
becomes an integral part of our shared narrative.
THE (UN)SEEN (2022)
In this work, two sheets of Japanese rice paper represent the conscious and subconscious, the thread in between portrays the memories, there are spaces for fragments, blanks and even false recollections. Memories are part of who we are. For some they are vivid and connect us strongly to the past, but for others they are fleeting wisps, their incompleteness troubling.
or lack thereof and the ongoing effect memories can have in our lives.
MONO NO AWARE
Mono no aware is a key term in Japanese culture and refers to the bittersweet realisation of the ephemeral nature of all things.
The impact of this philosophical perspective is to recognise the impermanence of everything that exists and to create a deeper appreciation and connection with it by recognising its temporary nature. Everything is ultimately fleeting and eventually transformed with the passage of time.
IT IS BUT A FLEETING THING
Impermanence is a feature of everything that lives. Change is the law of the universe. All things, feelings, and states pass away and are not permanent or graspable.
Can we fully enjoy the transient beauty of paper jewellery in the moment instead of wishing it would last forever?
